Registering for Classes in Yonsei

After you receive your acceptance from Yonsei, you will need to register yourself as an international student by uploading a valid proof of insurance. Make sure you do this before the deadline because only if you have registered can you access the course registration portal.

Important Stages in Course Registration

There are 3 stages in Yonsei’s course registration:

  1. Mileage system : You will be allocated 72 points to bid for the courses you want to take during the designated period
  2. Waiting Number system : Clicking war to get the courses you want
  3. Appealing system : Your last chance to get the courses you want to take

Mileage system

This system was only introduced 2 years ago and Yonsei is probably one of the first universities in Korea to use this system (most just use the Waiting Number system). It’s similar to NUS’ bidding system in a way that we are all allocated miles (points) to bid for the course we want. The difference is that every student, including the locals, will only have 72 points each semester and there is no carry-forward system so it is fair even for the new students.

What you need to do is to basically allocated how many mileages you want to use to bid for each class. Depending on the class you want to take, the maximum mileage you can use to bid for a class ranges between 12 points to 36 points. Of course, for popular courses you will need to use more points for a higher chance to get into the class. It’s similar to an auction with the mileage points as the money so I guess it’s pretty self-explanatory.

Since I planned to take 6 classes and most of my classes only allows a maximum of 12 points to bid for it, I simply allocated 12 points to all classes.

One thing to note is that you can only bid for one class of each course. For example, if you want to take an accounting class BIZ1234, you need to check the course’s timetable to see which class fits into your schedule. If the course has 2 classes, then you can only bid for either BIZ1234-01 OR BIZ1234-02. This is valid for the next round of class registration (Waiting Number system) as well so choose which class you want to register for beforehand.

Since this is a bidding system, there is no need to rush into the portal during the start time of the class registration. However, if you do, it may be beneficial as well. The first thing you want to do when you log in is to build your wishlist of classes. Simply search for the module code on the system and click the icon in the first column under “Wishlist” to add it. You can then allocate your mileage in the wish list tab. This wish list will also be saved for the next round in case you did not get it in the mileage round.

Waiting Number System

After the first round of class registration is closed, log back into the class registration portal after the result release time to see which classes you have successfully gotten. If you have gotten all the courses (like me *fiuh!*), congratulations! If not, you will need to be prepared for the second round which is the waiting number system.

This round runs on a first-come-first-serve basis so if you click to register first, you will get the class. If you are late and the class is full, then you can’t register and need to appeal for the class.

For this round, I strongly recommend you to log in to the system before the start of the round. Then using your wish list from round 1, start clicking on “apply” button for the classes you wish to register for a few seconds before the actual time to increase your chances of success. Also, ensure that you have a high speed connection to the internet. Local students go to the PC Bang (PC room) where the internet speed is known to be extra fast, specially for this round.

Appeal System

The appeal system is there as the last resort for students who do not get their classes. When you have successfully registered as a student in the SAY program, you will receive an email confirming your registration. There will be a PDF file attached to it with all the course registration instructions. At the last page, there will be a form that you can use to appeal.

Basically, to appeal, you need to go for the first class of the course you wish to register for and try to get the professor to sign your appeal form. After getting the signature, you will need to submit it to the administration office in Baekyang Hall before the add and drop period ends. The admin office will then try to add you into the course.

Goodluck!
